Cairo – London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Ain Shams University Hospital, one of the largest educational medical institutions in Africa and the Middle East.

The MoU commits GOSH to prepare and deliver a service review and development plan for the identified specialties of intensive care, Haematology, and Oncology for the next five years.

A high-level delegation from GOSH has arrived in Egypt for a four-day working visit this week to sign the joint research agreement. The terms of reference contained in the MoU indicate that, GOSH plans to develop and commence a clinical education training programme for the identified specialties; deliver a visiting consultant programme which will provide consultants for both identified specialties; and provide an opportunity for four medical observerships from Ain Shams University Hospital to visit GOSH in the UK.

British Ambassador to Egypt Sir Geoffrey Adams said: “I am delighted that Great Ormond Street Hospital, which is one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals, is partnering with Ain Shams. This agreement will enable two outstanding institutions to join forces in delivering world-class healthcare service to Egyptian children.”

Great Ormond Street Hospital Director of International Services, Mr Trevor Clarke OBE, said: “Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children is delighted to be able to work with colleagues at Ain Shams University Hospital to improve paediatric services through specific education and training and visiting consultant programmes. We look forward to a successful relationship and exchange between our two institutions.”
