Drama in Madrid, Bayern advance

Listen to this article

  • Real Madrid score a late penalty to defeat Juventus
  • Holders reach semis, despite spirited Juventus comeback
  • Bayern Munich reach last four after home draw with Sevilla

Bayern Munich hosted Sevilla, while holders Real Madrid went up against last year’s finalists Juventus in Wednesday’s quarter-final, second legs, in the UEFA Champions League.

On a night of high drama at the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid needed a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty deep into second-half stoppage time to get past Juventus 4-3 on aggregate, despite losing the second leg 3-1. A brace from Mario Mandzukic and a Blaise Matuidi strike saw the Italian giants erase a three-goal aggregate deficit before Ronaldo dramatically secured the holders’ spot in the semi-finals.

In Bavaria, Bayern Munich did enough to advance to Friday’s draw for the last four after claiming a 0-0 result at home to Sevilla. The newly-crowned German Bundesliga champions made their first-leg win in Spain count, as they progressed 2-1 on aggregate.
