Today January 6, 2019, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met Mr. Khamis El-Jihnaoui, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tunisia, as a part of his current visit to Cairo.

Ambassador Mahmoud Afifi, Spokesman for the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, said that the meeting discussed preparations and ongoing arrangements in coordination between the General Secretariat of the League and the relevant authorities in Tunisia in preparation for the 30th Ordinary Session of the League of Arab States Summit in Tunis on March 31, The recent visit by a delegation from the Secretariat to Tunisia, which included access to the preparations at the Summit and residence premises, and consultation on the dimensions of the organizational and substantive aspects of the Summit, as is the case in the context of the Secretariat’s communication with the host countries For the Arab summits.

The Spokesman pointed out that the Secretary-General was keen to confirm the Secretariat’s full cooperation with the Tunisian side and harness all its expertise and potentials in order to ensure the success of this summit, which comes at a stage that requires concerted efforts and momentum. In the framework of the Arab League system, which the Tunisian Minister in turn expressed his country’s aspiration to it.

On the other hand, the Spokesman pointed out that the meeting witnessed the focus on dealing with the recent developments in the situation in Libya and the ongoing contacts in support of the efforts of the UN envoy, as well as through the mechanism of neighboring countries and the international Quartet concerned with Libya, which includes its membership of the Arab League. To reach a consensus between the Libyan parties in order to move forward in overcoming the Libyan crisis, which is approaching its eighth year, which would achieve the aspirations of all the Libyan people, eliminate the thorn of terrorism and extremism, and support the rebuilding of Libyan state institutions. At the end of his statement, the Spokesman added that the Secretary General also discussed with the Tunisian Minister the dimensions and developments of a number of other regional issues of priority during the current phase, including the situation in Syria and Yemen, developments of the Palestinian issue and the most important topics on the agenda of the Arab Summit.
