Ahly coach Martin Lasarte has hailed his players’ performance in Saturday’s big win over Tanzanian side Simba, adding, however, that the African Champions League is not over yet.

“Scoring five goals in the first half made our mission easier in the second,” the coach said in a press conference after the match.

The Reds, who continued their recent fine run, hammered the Tanzanian visitors 5-0 in Alexandria and moved three points clear at the top of their African Champions League group.

Midfielder Karim Walid scored twice and teammates Amr El-Sulaya, Ali Maaloul and Junior Ajayi were also on target in the first half.

“We played very well in the first half. The big result allowed us to play with less effort after the break,” the coach explained.

“Scoring five goals permitted us to replace our players who got yellow cards. Also we had the chance to push those who just returned from injury.

“We still have many matches in the tournament. The competition isn’t over yet. The victory over Simba is very important, but we just played three matches until now and the competition is still ongoing,” the Ahly coach concluded.

Ahly have seven points at the halfway stage of Group D, three ahead of DR Congo’s Vita Club and four clear of Simba. Algeria’s JS Saoura lie at the bottom with two points.

Ahly will take on Simba away from home in the fourth round 12 February.
