Record eight-time winners Ahly were paired with South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter finals of the African Champions League after the draw was made in Cairo on Wednesday.

According to ahramonline, Ahly famously defeated Sundowns 4-1 on aggregate in the 2001 Champions League final for their third triumph, before going on to win five more trophies.

However, the Red Devils have not lifted the coveted trophy since 2013, having lost the 2017 and 2018 finals to Morocco’s Wydad and Tunisia’s Esperance respectively.

Sundowns were crowned African champions in 2016 after beating Zamalek, Ahly’s Cairo nemesis, 3-1 on aggregate.

Holders Esperance meet Algeria’s CS Constantine, with the winners taking on either Sundowns or Ahly.

In the other Champions League last-eight ties, 2017 winners Wydad were paired with Guinea’s Horoya AC, who reached the quarters for the second successive season, and five-time champions Mazembe were drawn with Tanzanian outsiders Simba.

The first legs will be held on 5 and 6 April, with the return matches taking place a week later.
