Their Royal Highnesses travel back to the UK after a successful two-day visit to Egypt

20 November 2021, CAIRO – After a successful two day visit to Egypt; the first in Cairo and the second in Alexandria, Their Royal Highnesses head back to the UK delighted with the various experiences and new connections they developed in ‘Om El Donya.’

On Thursday, Prince Charles met with Head of Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church Pope Tawadros II, and discussed the role of religion in climate change as well as violence against women, and how to address these issues. His Royal Highness enjoyed the warm and intimate conversation and wisdom of his Holiness.

On the second day of the visit, Prince Charles visited the Greek Campus in Downtown Cairo, where he was welcomed by Egyptian Minister of Environment Dr Yasmine Fouad. There, he discussed with various Egyptian and British businesses the possible opportunities for growing green, innovative projects in Egypt, in support of his Sustainable Markets Initiative.

His Royal Highness also celebrated the contribution of UK-funded project StartEgypt to women economic empowerment and combatting gender-based violence, while meeting female-led businesses that received financial and technical support through the project and learning more about their breakthroughs.

Meanwhile, the Duchess of Cornwall visited the Brooke Veterinary Hospital, where Her Royal Highness is President of Brooke Hospital Worldwide.

Their Royal Highnesses then travelled to Alexandria, where they visited the Jesuit Cultural Center and learned more about its history, and its religious and community role, while touring an art exhibition on famous Alexandrian figures designed by young Sudanese refugees.

Finally, before heading off to the UK, they visited one of Alexandria’s most prominent sites, the Bibliotheca Alexandria, where they were given a tour by its director Dr Mostafa El-Fiki, who presented Their Royal Highnesses with a gift: a book on the history of Egyptian civilization. During the tour, they viewed some of the antiquities and manuscripts featured in the library, met with young Egyptian writers and watched a musical performance by young children.
