7 March 2022, CAIRO – The British Ambassador to Egypt Gareth Bayley welcomed back 80 Chevening scholars from the 2019/2020 and 2020-2021 academic years at the British Embassy, congratulating them on successfully completing their Master’s degrees in UK universities.

All the scholars have spent a year studying in British universities and received fully funded scholarships provided by the UK’s world-famous Chevening scholarship programme. The students, equal numbers male and female, come from 16 different governorates across Egypt. Their studies range across a variety of different sectors, including international relations, media, education, development, economics, and law.

Chevening alumnus and prominent academic Prof Dr. Sherif Kamel, Dean of the AUC Business School, spoke to the students about how Chevening scholarships offer an excellent opportunity to expand their knowledge as they work on creating positive impacts in Egyptian society.

British Ambassador to Egypt, Gareth Bayley, said: “We are proud that Chevening alumni in Egypt include a wide range of brilliant Egyptians – everyone from ministers to doctors, from filmmakers to decision makers. Chevening invests in Egyptian students, so they can in turn invest in building a brighter future for their country. Some of the Chevening alumni in previous years have gone on to achieve amazing things, and hold senior positions both inside Egypt and internationally. We look forward to continuing our partnership with to Egyptians and providing excellent students with world-class education.

Over 1300 Egyptians have been accepted onto the Chevening scholarship programme since its launch in 1983. Applications for the UK government’s Chevening scheme open every year in August, with applications able to be submitted via the Chevening website, at www.chevening.org/apply. All Egyptians are able to apply, regardless of age, gender, disability, or religion. The deadline for applying for 2022 is in early November.
