Africa Union – Rebels of Tigray hand over heavy weapons to Ethiopian goverment according to Pretoria peace deal signed early November 2022

AllAfrica – An Africa Union monitoring team has comfirmed that rebels in the nothern Tigray region have begun to hand over heavy weapons to the Ethiopian goverment as part of the Pretoria peace deal signed in early November last year.

According to Deutsche Welle, the deal includes “the disarmament of rebel forces, regaining federal authority in Tigray, as well as connecting the cut-off region to infrastructure and communications”. Aid, services and some flights are also in the process of being restored.

According to the Ethiopian News Agency, military observers from different countries attended tthe event that ook place in Agula camp, 36km from the regional capital, Mekelle.

This brings renewed for Ethiopia’s recovery from a war that started in November 2020 after the Tigray region held elections that were not approved by the country’s central government.
