Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amirabdollahian has underlined that the Islamic Republic is ready to cooperate with Lebanon in economic, trade, and energy fields and that Tehran will continue to be a friend of Beirut in tough times.
Amirabdollahian made the remarks in a meeting with a number of political, cultural, media, academic and social figures in Beirut on Friday night.

The top diplomat noted that he held good talks with Lebanon’s prime minister, speaker, and secretary general of the Hezbollah resistance movement, adding that he discussed the latest developments in Palestine and the occupied territories in the negotiations with Ziyad al-Nakhalah, the leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

The Iranian FM also said that the Islamic Republic believes that political factions in Lebanon are competent enough to elect a president without foreign interference.

He also hoped that the political process in Lebanon will be completed with the election of the president and formation of the new government and that the ground will be provided for the strengthening of bilateral relations and the visit of the Iranian president to Lebanon.

President Raisi pursues a balanced foreign policy and prioritizes cooperation with neighboring and regional states, the foreign minister said.

Tehran is well aware of economic woes and energy shortage in Lebanon, he said, adding that Iran is prepared to collaborate with the Arab country in this respect.

Iran supports Sunni resistance in Lebanon and Syria, as it has been supporting Shia resistance, he said, adding that in the 2006 Lebanon War, the Zionist regime and its allies wanted to uproot the resistance movement to follow up the Greater Middle East plot, but the resistance movement is now experiencing its best situation in Lebanon and Palestine.

FM Amirabdollahian also visited the cemetery of resistance martyrs in Beirut to pay tribute to the martyrs.

The minister and his entourage visited the graves of martyrs of Islamic resistance such as Imad Mughniyeh and Mustafa Badreddine.
