Today, Thursday, April 6, 2023, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS), Ahmed Aboul Gheit, received His Excellency President Nikos Christodoulides, President of the Republic of Cyprus, who is currently visiting Cairo.
Jamal Rushdi, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that Aboul Gheit welcomed the visit of the Cypriot president to the headquarters of the Arab League, pointing to the deep-rooted historical relationship between Cyprus and the Arab world and the extended political, economic and popular relations that bind the two sides. He also stressed the importance of the cooperation and coordination mechanisms that bring them together on regional issues. and international interests.
The spokesman stated that Cyprus is an important partner of the League on the European continent and the European Union, stressing that Cyprus plays a traditional role in support of peace, security and stability in the region, as it is a party that has constant positions on the Palestinian issue and support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
The Spokesman added that the meeting witnessed an exchange of views on a number of important regional and international issues, foremost among them the recent developments in Jerusalem and the situation related to Syria and Libya, as well as the repercussions of the war in Ukraine on the Arab and European regions and the overall situation in the Middle East region.
The spokesman stated that the Cypriot President expressed to the Secretary-General his appreciation for the important role played by the Arab League at the regional level and his country’s keenness to strengthen the bonds of relations and fraternal ties with the Arab world. He pointed to the convergence of visions on the importance of Arab-European relations, as well as the need to strengthen them and continue the joint effort to consolidate relations and aspects of cooperation between the Arab and European sides.
