The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture, Embassy of India, Cairo will organize ‘Tagore – Mahfouz Caricature’ Exhibition on 11 December 2024 to commemorate the birth anniversary of great Egyptian Nobel laureate, Naguib Mahfouz. On this auspicious occasion, the literary achievements of Indian Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore will also be celebrated.
‘Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture’ in collaboration with the ‘Fayoum Caricature Museum’ and ‘Egypt Cartoon Blog’ had organized ‘Tagore – Mahfouz Caricature’ competition in the month of April 2024. A total of 38 caricatures entries by 38 artists from 12 countries around the world, including; India, Serbia, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, China, Romania, Peru, Russia, Poland, Syria, Venezuela and Egypt, featuring world’s two great Nobel Laureates, were received.
A group of prominent Egyptian caricature artists also participated, namely: Ahmed Alawi, Hosni Abbas, Adham Lotfy, Farouk Moussa, Tharwat Mortada, Ghada Mustafa, Hadeer Yehia, Hani Abdel Gawad, Marwa Ibrahim, Omar Siddiq, Shaimaa Shafei and Yasmine Gamal.
The exhibition presents a collection of caricatures that bring together two of the world’s greats who won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Rabindranath Tagore and Naguib Mahfouz, who are considered among the most influential and prominent novelists from India and Egypt, were awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 and 1988 respectively. While Rabindranath Tagore was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, Naguib Mahfouz was the first Egyptian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The Exhibition of Tagore – Mahfouz caricatures will be inaugurated by Charge d’Affaires H.E. Ms. C. Sushma at the Naguib Mahfouz Museum, on 11 December 2024 at 1:00 pm, in the presence of a group of caricature artists, a number of journalists, media professionals, and the public.
