Xinhua _ The BRICS Media and Think Tank Forum unveiled a landmark initiative on Wednesday aimed at enhancing cooperation and advancing development in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), with a focus on AI-powered journalism and research within think tanks.
The initiative outlines a shared vision to build strategic synergies that can reshape global communication, foster new models of industrial collaboration, and promote intelligent production as the foundation for a next-generation knowledge-sharing ecosystem.
Participants reached a strong consensus on the transformative impact of AI, noting that while it offers unprecedented opportunities for digital advancement across the Global South, it also intensifies systemic risks such as technological monopolies and data hegemony.
In response, the forum urged BRICS media and think tanks to align their AI efforts with the developmental priorities of the Global South. This includes promoting a collaborative framework based on joint technological innovation, harmonized standards, and inclusive governance to ensure that AI serves the common good.
The declaration calls on BRICS stakeholders to treat the initiative as a starting point for building actionable frameworks through shared information networks and co-developed narratives. These tools, the forum emphasized, are essential for enabling countries of the Global South to harness digital transformation and collectively contribute to reshaping the global order.
Held under the theme “BRICS United: Forging a New Chapter for the Global South,” the forum took place from Tuesday to Thursday in Rio de Janeiro. It brought together over 250 delegates from 36 countries — including BRICS member states, partner nations, and regional organizations — representing media outlets, think tanks, governmental bodies, and enterprises.
