IRNA — President Hassan Rouhani on Friday congratulated liberation of Mosul to Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and the Iraqi people.

In a message released on Friday, the President congratulated the liberation of the largest city under the rule of Daesh (ISIL) and called the terrorist groups’ criminal and violent actions against oppressed people of Mosul unprecedented in temporary history.

This victory is the result of cooperation, coordination and sacrifices of people, military and the volunteer forces which was accomplished by neighbors’ support, President added.

He said that Mosul liberation shows the importance of real fight against criminals who commit genocide and violence in the name of Islam.

Islamic Republic shares its happiness with Iraqi people and declares its preparedness for full-scale fight against the criminal groups in the whole region, Rouhani noted.

Iraqi forces captured on Thursday the wrecked historic mosque of Mosul in which Daesh terrorist group proclaimed its self-styled ‘caliphate’ three years ago.

Taking the Grand al-Nuri Mosque gives a symbolic victory to the Iraqi forces who have been battling for more than eight months to capture Mosul, the northern city that served as Daesh’s de-facto capital in Iraq.
