Today marks the 7th year of major genocidal attack by the Burmese military against the Rohingya in 2017. Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organization in Malaysia (MERHROM) would like express our gratitude to each and everyone who supported the Rohingya genocide survivors and constantly voices out our plights for the longest decades of genocides.
We cannot thank you enough for all the ongoing support and significant intervention you have extended to us. This year in May 2024, the genocidal attacks against the Rohingya reached the highest level with the Arakan Army (AA) taking control over the Rakhine State and killing the Rohingya including women, children and elderly.
We, the people of Myanmar urge the Veto countries, United Nations, EU, OIC, ASEAN, World Leaders, and the international community to take immediate actions end the Rohingya Genocide in Rakhine State without delay. We urge humanitarian aid to reach the affected Rohingya in the Rakhine State including medical aid. This is what we urgently need.
On this day, we hope for Malaysia who will be the ASEAN Chairman in 2025 to engage significantly and put more pressure to ASEAN to end the Rohingya genocide and to restore democracy in Myanmar. Delay action only allow more killing of Rohingya, rape, torture, arrest and detention, kidnapping and trafficking of Rohingya.
We Rohingya were facing slow burning genocide since 1940s where countless innocent ethnic Rohingya were deliberately killed in various ongoing genocidal attacks. In 1978, more than 300,000, ethnic Rohingya fled to Bangladesh when the Burmese military launched Operation Naga Min or “Dragon King”. In 1982, ethnic Rohingya lost their rights and were made stateless after the Burmese military excluded Rohingya in the new Citizenship Law 1982. Between 1991-1992, the Burmese military launched Operation Pyi Thaya or “Clean and Beautiful Nation” to eliminate the Rohingya resulting in more than 250 000 Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh.
Another major genocidal attack against the Rohingya took place in 2012 but it was called sectarian violence which is not true. The truth is it was the genocidal attack planned by the Burmese military to eliminate Rohingya through anti-Rohingya propaganda resulted in mass killing of Rohingya, destructions of houses, mosques and properties resulted in hundred of thousands of Rohingya were forced into IDP camps in Sittwe until now. The genocidal attack continued in 2017 where more than 750 000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh while an uncounted number of Rohingya were killed.
This year in May 2024, the genocidal attack against the Rohingya were launched by the Burmese military and the Arakan Army (AA) resulting in mass killing of Rohingya especially in Buthidaung and Maungdaw Township. This time no Rohingya could escape the Arakan State as they were under the control of the Arakan Army (AA). The wounded Rohingya were left to die without treatment as no medical assistance was provided. Until now none of the humanitarian agencies could enter Rakhine State to provide humanitarian aid. As a consequence, more Rohingya died due to no food, water, treatment and shelter. Rohingya were targeted by the Arakan Army (AA) by drone bombs and fired artillery. Thousands of Rohingya civilians including children, women, and the elderly were brutally killed while many others were injured during and after the genocidal attacks.
Obviously, this is a Rohingya Genocide, not an ethnic cleasing, massacre, sectarian violence or conflict. We urge everyone including the members of the media to use the correct terminology when describing the Rohingya situation for the Rohingya to seek justice and protection we urgently need.
Rohingya were killed both in small scale to large scale of genocidal attacks. The ultimate target is to eliminate the Rohingya in Arakan State @ Rakhine State. The name of Arakan State was changed to Rakhine State as one of the strategies to eliminate the existence of Arakan State and the Rohingya.
The ongoing situation of Rohingya required more significant actions above the current interventions. The lack of political will to save the Rohingya lives only eliminates Rohingya from the earth. Therefore, MERHROM urge all parties to work together for these priority to: –
1. send UN peace keeping force to the Arakan State to ensure the safety of the population
2. take special measures to end the Rohingya Genocide including taking legal actions to genociders
3. deploy emergency humanitarian aid to Arakan State without delay
4. stop the selling of the weapons to the genociders
5. allow Rohingya for immediate safe disembarkation
6. increase resettlement quotas for the Rohingya genocide survivors
7. initiate special measures to restore democracy in Myanmar
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani
