In the wake of recent actions by individuals in Europe that have offended many Muslims, the European Union reiterates its strong and firm rejection of any form of incitement to religious hatred and intolerance. The word of the union was as follows:
Respect for diversity is a core value of the European Union, and this includes respect for other religious communities.
The desecration of the Qur’an, or any other book considered sacred, is an assault, a lack of respect, and a clear provocation.
There is no place for expressions of racism, xenophobia and related intolerance in the European Union.
We continue to defend freedom of religion or belief and freedom of expression, abroad and at home; But not everything that is legal is moral. Now is the time to stand together for mutual understanding and respect.
These acts of individual agitators only benefit those who want to divide us and our societies.
