Sputnik – Argentinian-born Pope Francis has made support for immigration a pillar of his pontificate and has repeatedly encouraged nations around the world to welcome migrants rather than stigmatise them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Pope Francis has sent 500,000 dollars to\u00a0help migrants in\u00a0Mexico who are attempting to\u00a0enter the United States, Vatican News reported. The funds will reportedly be distributed among\u00a027 projects advanced by\u00a016 Mexican dioceses and religious congregations, which asked for\u00a0assistance to\u00a0provide food, lodging, and other necessities to\u00a0the migrants.<\/p>\n

“In recent months, thousands of\u00a0migrants have arrived in\u00a0Mexico, having travelled more than\u00a04,000 kilometers on\u00a0foot and with\u00a0makeshift vehicles from\u00a0Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Men and women, often with\u00a0young children, flee poverty and violence, hoping for\u00a0a better future in\u00a0the United States. However, the U.S. border remains closed to\u00a0them”, said a press release from\u00a0Peter’s Pence, the organisation handling the funds.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Peter’s Pence, these migrants “were stranded, unable to\u00a0enter the United States, without\u00a0a home or livelihood”, that is why the Catholic Church hosted “thousands of\u00a0them in\u00a0hotels within\u00a0the dioceses or religious congregations, providing basic necessities”, including lodging and clothing.The article likewise points out\u00a0that the migrant caravans are no longer in\u00a0the media spotlight, which has allegedly caused decreased government and private financial assistance to\u00a0migrants.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the pontiff said that migrants bring with\u00a0them the wealth of\u00a0a multicultural and multi-ethnic world, and urged host nations to\u00a0not be “afraid” of\u00a0them.<\/p>\n

Europe grew in\u00a0this way, with\u00a0the contrast of\u00a0cultures”, he told students and faculty of\u00a0the San Carlo school of\u00a0Milan.<\/p>\n

The news comes shortly after\u00a0US President Donald Trump reiterated threats to\u00a0close part of\u00a0the US-Mexico border if Mexico doesn’t take acton to\u00a0stem the flow of\u00a0illegal migrants headed north.<\/p>\n

On 31 March, Pope Francis criticised Trump over\u00a0his proposed border wall, saying that his decision would leave the United States a “prisoner” of\u00a0its own isolation.<\/p>\n

“He who raises a wall ends up\u00a0a prisoner of\u00a0the wall he erected. That\u2019s a universal law in\u00a0the social order and in\u00a0the personal one. If you raise a wall between\u00a0people, you end up\u00a0a prisoner of\u00a0that wall that you raised. We need bridges and we feel pain when we see people who prefer to\u00a0build walls”, he said.<\/p>\n

Caravans of\u00a0migrants from\u00a0Central American countries have been moving toward\u00a0the United States through\u00a0Mexico despite\u00a0the government’s attempts to\u00a0curb the tide.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration has on\u00a0a multitude of\u00a0occasions claimed that gang members as\u00a0well as\u00a0drug smugglers are trying to\u00a0cross the US border with\u00a0other illegal aliens.
