Donald Trump may not need Congress\u2019 go-ahead to\u00a0launch a war against\u00a0Iran, something that his advisers \u201chave been quietly building\u201d a case for\u00a0amid\u00a0mounting sanctions,\u00a0NBC News\u2019 Jonathan Allen<\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n

The author claims that the plan\u2019s key elements include drawing links between\u00a0al-Qaeda and Iran to\u00a0portray the Islamic Republic as\u00a0a terror threat to\u00a0the US, \u201cwhich is exactly what administration officials have been doing in\u00a0recent weeks”.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat could give Trump the justification he needs to\u00a0fight Iran under\u00a0the still-in-effect 2001 use-of-force resolution without\u00a0congressional approval\u201d, Allen argues, adding that Congress will unlikely grant the US president \u201cnew authority to\u00a0strike Iran under\u00a0the current circumstances\u201d.<\/p>\n

The author\u2019s comments come after\u00a0the New York Times quoted several unnamed senior US officials as\u00a0saying that \u201c[President Donald] Trump was firm in\u00a0saying he did not want a military clash with\u00a0the Iranians\u201d.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Trump was reportedly frustrated with\u00a0his top advisers over\u00a0Iran, saying that the hard-line policy pushed by\u00a0Bolton and Secretary of\u00a0State Mike Pompeo could lead to\u00a0the involvement of\u00a0the US in\u00a0a military struggle with\u00a0Tehran, breaking Trump\u2019s campaign pledge to\u00a0avoid costly foreign wars.<\/p>\n

The Washington Post cited an unnamed source as\u00a0saying that Trump wants to\u00a0speak with\u00a0the Iranian leaders and find a diplomatic solution as\u00a0he is uncomfortable with\u00a0talks of\u00a0war with\u00a0the country and \u201call this \u2018regime change\u2019 talk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, for\u00a0his part, voiced hope that a war would not be unleashed in\u00a0the Middle East as\u00a0Washington-Tehran tensions persist.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Leader of\u00a0the Islamic Revolution has also announced, we are certain that no war will break out\u00a0because neither we want a war, nor has anyone the idea or illusion that it can confront Iran in\u00a0the region\u201d, Zarif said in\u00a0an interview with\u00a0the IRNA news agency on\u00a0Saturday.<\/p>\n

His remarks were preceded by\u00a0Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameneni stressing that \u201cthe Iranian nation\u2019s definite option will be resistance in\u00a0the face of\u00a0the US\u201d and that \u201cin this confrontation, the US would be forced into\u00a0a retreat\u201d.<\/p>\n

Tensions have been simmering since\u00a0Trump announced last May the US\u2019 withdrawal from\u00a0the 2015 Iran nuclear deal with\u00a0Iran, also known as\u00a0the Joint Comprehensive Plan of\u00a0Action (JCPOA), reinstating harsh sanctions against\u00a0the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n

The tensions exacerbated earlier this month, when the US imposed more anti-Iranian sanctions and sent an aircraft carrier strike group, a squadron of\u00a0B-52 bombers and Patriot interceptors to\u00a0the Middle East to\u00a0grapple with\u00a0what Washington describes as\u00a0a threat emanating from\u00a0Iran.<\/p>\n

On 8 May, Tehran announced that it had suspended some of\u00a0its obligations under\u00a0the JCPOA, pledging to\u00a0return to\u00a0full compliance if the other parties to\u00a0the deal were able to\u00a0help solve problems caused by\u00a0US sanctions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
