Macron invited Zarif to G-7 southwest France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"speakable-p-1 p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ashraf AboArafe<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-1 p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Donald Trump said Monday that French President Emmanuel Macron notified him in advance that a top Iranian diplomat would be invited to the <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2019\/08\/25\/trump-g-7-president-denies-behind-scenes-discord-summit\/2114533001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">G-7<\/a>\u00a0summit of rich nations in southwest France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-2 p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to <em>USA Today<\/em>, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2019\/08\/25\/iran-diplomat-javad-zarif-g-7-wont-meet-with-trump\/2114480001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">Javad Zarif<\/a>\u2019s surprise arrival on Sunday, the second day of the three-day summit, came at the invitation of France amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">But Trump said Zarif\u2019s appearance wasn\u2019t a surprise to him. Trump said Macron told him he had extended the invitation and asked for his approval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI knew everything he was doing,\u201d Trump said of Macron.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Zarif did not meet with Trump or other U.S. officials while he was in France, but he did meet with Macron. \u201cI thought it was too soon to meet,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;I said I don\u2019t want to meet right now.\u201d&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Asked what happens next, Trump said, \u201cWe\u2019ll see what happens. It\u2019s all very new.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Trump said he is not looking for regime change in Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking to make Iran rich again,\u201d he said. \u201cLet them do well, if they want.
