How can the morning rise in grace<\/span><\/strong>
unless your lips release the blessing, \u201cGood morning\u201d<\/em>?<\/span><\/strong>
And how can evening settle softly<\/span><\/strong>
unless your whisper folds the dusk in \u201cGood evening\u201d<\/em>?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

How may the air become a gentle breeze,<\/span><\/strong>
unperfumed by the nectar of your breath?<\/span><\/strong>
And how shall shadows keep their poise<\/span><\/strong>
when your figure bends the light<\/span><\/strong>
yet withholds the tender kiss<\/span><\/strong>
that calms a longing heart?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

How shall roses bloom in their gardens<\/span><\/strong>
if your smile denies them the secret of dew?<\/span><\/strong>
How shall clouds rain yearning<\/span><\/strong>
without borrowing the hush of sorrow from your lashes?<\/span><\/strong>
And how shall the sea grow tranquil at the fall of tide<\/span><\/strong>
if you refuse it a glance of quiet approval?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

How can the stars ignite their lanterns<\/span><\/strong>
unless your spirit nears their night<\/span><\/strong>
with the devotion of a prayer?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

How will mountains guard their dignity<\/span><\/strong>
when you pass beside them\u2014<\/span><\/strong>
they rise to rival your majesty, then shy away?<\/span><\/strong>
And how can birds perfect their songs<\/span><\/strong>
if the wind does not carry your name<\/span><\/strong>
across the breadth of heaven?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

How may the seasons take their turns<\/span><\/strong>
unless you<\/em> choose the colour of autumn,<\/span><\/strong>
the flavour of winter,<\/span><\/strong>
and the tenderness of spring?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And how can the universe remain a universe<\/span><\/strong>
if you, for one brief hour,<\/span><\/strong>
forsake its orbit?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

How can this heart stay whole<\/span><\/strong>
when you pass through it<\/span><\/strong>
like fire through the dry and waiting earth?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

How can my veins lie still<\/span><\/strong>
when your hidden flame awakens them,<\/span><\/strong>
and the blood stirs upward\u2014<\/span><\/strong>
yearning<\/span><\/strong>
until it reaches your name?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

How might I flee from you<\/span><\/strong>
when you dwell inside me\u2014<\/span><\/strong>
nearer than breath,<\/span><\/strong>
farther than anything mortals may grasp?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Are you a tenderness in which existence melts,<\/span><\/strong>
or the sovereign might of an ambassador<\/span><\/strong>
who rules a single lover<\/span><\/strong>
with the decree of queens,<\/span><\/strong>
claiming his soul<\/span><\/strong>
as though it were the spoils of a destiny<\/span><\/strong>
none can escape?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Tell me\u2014how shall I hide,<\/span><\/strong>
when my spirit stands revealed<\/span><\/strong>
whenever you call it,<\/span><\/strong>
and my very pulse ignites<\/span><\/strong>
at the nearness of your hands?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

What are you?<\/span><\/strong>
A magic kept for prophets?<\/span><\/strong>
Or a fate that inscribed my heart<\/span><\/strong>
the moment you were born?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And if you ask me, \u201cHow?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/strong>
I answer\u2014<\/span><\/strong>
there is no refuge from this truth:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

With a single glance from you, longing is created\u2026
and with your absence\u2014
