Are we the nation of light\u2026 or merely the heirs of its shadow?<\/strong><\/span>
\nDo we truly see\u2026 or only pretend to listen?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Abraham passed through our streets\u2026 yet we did not recognize him,<\/span>
\nFor we were busy applauding idols unseen\u2014<\/span>
\nIdols of screens, of names, of illusions for sale.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said to us:<\/span>
\n\u201cDo you not see?\u201d<\/span>
\nWe replied: \u201cWe do\u2026\u201d<\/span>
\nYet we chose not to perceive.<\/span><\/p>\n

He shattered their idols with an axe\u2014<\/span>
\nWhile we\u2026<\/span>
\nNurture ours within,<\/span>
\nWater them with fear,<\/span>
\nAnd decorate them with silence.<\/span><\/p>\n

When he was cast into the fire\u2026 he was saved,<\/span>
\nWhile we throw ourselves daily into the fires of anxiety,<\/span>
\nYet fail to trust as he did.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hagar ran between Safa and Marwa\u2014<\/span>
\nAnd her striving became a ritual\u2026<\/span>
\nWhile we run endlessly,<\/span>
\nNot knowing why we run.<\/span><\/p>\n

She asked:<\/span>
\n\u201cIs this by God\u2019s command?\u201d<\/span>
\n\u201cYes,\u201d they said.<\/span>
\nThen she replied: \u201cHe will not abandon us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet we ask everything\u2026 except God,<\/span>
\nAnd fear everything\u2026 except the loss of meaning.<\/span><\/p>\n

And in a long night\u2026<\/span>
\nIshmael said:<\/span>
\n\u201cO my father, do as you are commanded\u2026\u201d<\/span>
\nWhile we delay obedience,<\/span>
\nAnd negotiate truth to fit our desires.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the angels gave glad tidings to Sarah\u2014<\/span>
\nShe laughed\u2026<\/span>
\nFor joy arrived after despair.<\/span><\/p>\n

But when glad tidings delay for us\u2026<\/span>
\nWe shut the gates of heaven,<\/span>
\nAnd whisper: \u201cNothing will come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Where do we stand compared to them?<\/span>
\nThey were a family\u2014<\/span>
\nNot angels,<\/span>
\nYet they chose God\u2026 and became light.<\/span><\/p>\n

O you who live in a weary age\u2026<\/span>
\nAbraham has not disappeared\u2014<\/span>
\nIt is you\u2026<\/span>
