Today, Monday, July 10, Mr. Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), chaired the first meeting to launch the Business Leaders Group of the COP27 Conference, which was held via videoconference. The group is chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in conjunction with Mr. Nassef Sawiris. CEO of the OCI Group operating in the field of hydrogen, nitrogen and energy.

In a statement by Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesman and director of the Public Diplomacy Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he indicated that the foreign minister stressed during the meeting the aspiration of the Egyptian presidency of the conference to cooperate with partners from the private sector to enhance efforts for a just transition towards environmentally friendly energy sources. He also explained that the COP27 conference, which Egypt hosted in Sharm El-Sheikh last November, witnessed a wide participation of countries and governments along with representatives of the private sector, noting the important role of the business community and companies in addressing the repercussions of climate change, and the contributions it can make to implement the outputs of the Sharm conference. Sheikh.

Minister Shoukry also reviewed the many areas in which the private sector and the business community can contribute to support climate action, referring to the climate change adaptation agenda that was launched during the COP27 conference to enhance international efforts in the field of climate resilience, and the second edition of the regional forums on climate initiatives to finance climate action. And the sustainable development goals that will be organized in cooperation with the United Nations, in addition to the efforts of a just transition to environmentally friendly energy sources in a manner that takes into account development considerations, as well as efforts to address losses and damages resulting from climate change and the multiple initiatives of the Egyptian presidency of the conference that were launched during COP27 in various aspects of work. the climate.

At the end of his remarks, Ambassador Abu Zeid revealed that the COP27 Business Leaders Group includes many leaders and representatives of major international companies operating in various economic sectors. In that private sector to look at ways to support efforts to achieve climate action goals, especially with regard to mobilizing climate finance, implementing pledges, and supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.
