THE Korean Cultural Center in Egypt, in collaboration with the Publication Industry Promotion Agency of Korea (KPIPA), is hosting a new installment of the “Meeting Korean Literature” series on Thursday, October 15, at the Misr Public Library in Dokki. The event aims to introduce contemporary Korean literature to Egyptian audiences and foster cultural exchange between South Korea and Egypt.
The feature guest is Kang Ji-young, one of South Korea’s foremost crime and suspense novelists. She is known internationally for her widely acclaimed works, including Mrs. Shim the Killer, A Shop for Killers (Parts 1 & 2), and Frankenstein Family.

Event Highlights

  • An Evening with Kang Ji-young: An open discussion where the author will share insights into her creative journey, her approach to crafting complex characters, and the distinct traits of Korean crime fiction that allow it to transcend cultural barriers. She will also go behind the scenes of adapting A Shop for Killers into a television series and share her perspective on having her work translated into Arabic.
  • Literary Translation Workshop: A panel featuring Kang Ji-young alongside translators Salma Hassanein (Mrs. Shim the Killer) and Manar El-Dinari (A Shop for Killers, Parts 1 & 2). The session explores bringing Korean literature to Arabic readers from both author and translator viewpoints, tackling nuances in emotion, cultural expressions, and non-translatable idioms, complete with practical advice for aspiring literary translators.
  • Korean Book Exhibition: A featured exhibition showcasing a diverse collection of Korean literary works, Arabic translations, Kang Ji-young’s notable publications, and popular Korean graphic novels (webtoons/manhwa).
This event reflects the Korean Cultural Center’s ongoing effort to introduce contemporary Korean writing to Egyptian readers and build a direct bridge between authors, translators, and literary enthusiasts.
