The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, received today, Sunday, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Mr. Josep Borrell, and his accompanying delegation.
The official spokesman for the Secretary-General stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit affirmed during the meeting the historical and solid relations of friendship and distinguished cooperation between the League of Arab States and the European Union.
The spokesman stated that the in-depth political consultations session touched on a number of issues of common interest and crises in the region, particularly with regard to the Palestinian cause, where the two parties stressed the agreed constants to establish a just, lasting and comprehensive peace for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the peace initiative. The spokesman added that the two sides exchanged views regarding the crises in Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Ukraine and ways of working to settle them, as well as the need to address the root causes that contributed to the exacerbation of the illegal immigration crisis, especially across the Mediterranean.
He explained that the two sides agreed on the importance of strengthening and developing the existing institutional cooperation relations between the Arab League and the European Union in all areas of common interest.
