“Scans revealed that El-Sayed needs an operation as he has a broken toe and he will be out of actions from 4 to 6 weeks,” Zamalek revealed in a statement on their official website, without disclosing how long the player would remain out of play.

The 33-year-old deftly blocked a penalty by Dakhleya late in the second half, but was injured saving a long-range shot a few minutes later.

He was supposed to play in next week’s first leg as first-choice goalie Mahmoud Gennesh is suspended, but the Whites are now confirmed to play with third choice Omar Salah, their only remaining goalkeeper.

Gennesh will return between the sticks in the second leg in Cairo on 26 May.

After Sunday’s win over Dakhleya, Zamalek have moved up to second place in the Egyptian league table with 66 points, four behind leaders Ahly, who have played one game more.

Zamalek have ensured their first ever final spot in the Confederation Cup with a 1-0 aggregate win against Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel in the semis.

Cairo giants Zamalek have won the elite Champions League five times but have never won Africa’s secondary club competition.
