Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the COP27 Conference, Sameh Shoukry, held today Friday, November 11, an extensive meeting with the delegation of the US House of Representatives, headed by Ms. Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and members of the accompanying delegation, which included a number of chairmen of various committees and members of the House of Representatives.

Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Minister Shoukry was keen during the meeting to emphasize the strategic nature of relations between Egypt and the United States, and the distinguished cooperation that brings them together in various fields to achieve the common interests of the two countries. For her part, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives affirmed the interest that the United States attaches to its extended relationship with Egypt and the joint cooperation and coordination they bring together in the framework of strengthening regional security and achieving stability, prosperity and development.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman added that the members of the American delegation were keen to get acquainted with the Egyptian position on many issues, foremost of which are climate change issues, including providing climate finance, addressing losses and damages, protecting the communities most affected by climate change, and preserving seas and coasts.

In this context, Shoukry affirmed the keenness of the Egyptian presidency of COP27 to listen to the views of the various parties on the topics on the agenda of the conference, and to bring the views closer, explaining his keenness to achieve a balance between ambitions and desired hopes, and the current international context and the challenges it poses. In order to reach actionable results that enhance climate action in all its aspects.

Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid concluded his statements, revealing that the meeting included a lengthy discussion on water issues and the issue of the Renaissance Dam, where the Foreign Minister reviewed the various efforts of the Egyptian state in the field of preserving its water resources, and also stressed the Egyptian position calling for a binding legal agreement on the rules, filling and operation of the dam. Preserves the interests of the three countries, Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan, stressing the need for the Ethiopian side to have real political will to reach the required agreement.
