EL ALAMEIN, Egypt — August 20, 2026 — Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met today with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, during his official visit to Egypt.
The official spokesperson for the Secretary-General stated that the meeting focused on major regional developments and mechanisms to strengthen coordination on priority issues. Secretary-General Fahmy expressed appreciation for Qatar’s growing role in addressing regional challenges, praising Qatari diplomacy in mediation and conflict resolution.
Key Highlights of the Talks:
  • Gulf Security & Iranian Aggression: Discussions covered security in the Arabian Gulf. The Secretary-General reaffirmed his condemnation of Iranian attacks targeting Arab nations and their interests. He emphasized that Gulf security is integral to Arab national security, calling for strict adherence to international law, state sovereignty, good neighborliness, and urgent efforts to prevent regional escalation.
  • Palestinian Cause & Gaza Strategy: Both leaders examined the situation in Gaza and the West Bank. Fahmy stressed the critical need to maintain a durable ceasefire, secure a complete Israeli withdrawal, guarantee unhindered humanitarian aid delivery, and support Palestinian national institutions. He urged decisive action against ongoing Israeli violations, settlement expansion, and settler violence, while safeguarding a viable political track toward a two-state solution. The Arab League commended Qatar’s active mediation efforts in advancing peace.
  • Regional Crisis Resolution: The two officials exchanged views on crises in Sudan, Libya, Lebanon, and Syria. The Secretary-General reiterated the importance of preserving the territorial integrity and national institutions of Arab states through dialogue and sustainable political settlements.
  • Institutional Arab League Reform: Fahmy outlined his vision to modernize joint Arab action, aiming to enhance the Arab League’s proactive crisis-management capabilities through close, continuous coordination with Qatar and member states.
