ISLAMABAD witnessed a vibrant diplomatic milestone on 21 October 2026, as President Asif Ali Zardari welcomed the President of the Republic of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, to Aiwan-e-Sadr. Marking sixty years of diplomatic relations, the high-level State Visit served to translate enduring political goodwill into concrete economic, strategic, and cultural cooperation.
During bilateral deliberations, the two leaders reviewed a broad spectrum of mutual interests, emphasizing trade, investment, connectivity, and human resource development. President Zardari underscored Pakistan’s historical contributions to Maldivian infrastructure—highlighting landmarks such as the Parliament building and the School of Medicine in Malé—and announced readiness to deepen partnerships in climate resilience, sustainable development, and President Muizzu’s Five Million Tree Initiative. The discussions also addressed pressing international challenges, reaffirming a mutual commitment to multilateral diplomacy, peaceful dispute resolution, and solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The meetings culminated in a grand State Banquet hosted in honor of the Maldivian delegation, bringing together Pakistan’s premier leadership, including Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Defence Forces and COAS Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, cabinet ministers, parliamentarians, and the diplomatic corps.

Empowering Futures: The Vision of the First Ladies

Parallel to the presidential summit, First Lady of Pakistan, Bibi Asifa Bhutto Zardari MNA, hosted the First Lady of the Republic of Maldives, Sajidha Mohamed, at Aiwan-e-Sadr to champion people-centric diplomacy, youth advancement, and women’s empowerment.
Praising First Lady Sajidha Mohamed’s distinguished public health leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and her stewardship at the Maldives Food and Drug Authority, Bibi Asifa Bhutto Zardari emphasized the importance of fostering deeper educational, cultural, and professional exchanges between the two nations. The dialogue produced broad agreements to expand bilateral cooperation in women’s leadership, vocational training, modern agriculture, tourism, and sustainable entrepreneurship.
Highlighting Pakistan’s social protection framework, Bibi Asifa Bhutto Zardari spotlighted the transformative impact of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP)—founded in 2008 to honor the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto—alongside the Benazir Nashonuma Programme, which combats childhood stunting. Concluding the warm engagement, the Pakistan First Lady presented pink ribbons to the Maldivian delegation as a powerful gesture of cross-border solidarity for breast cancer awareness.
