Malaysia on Friday condemned the militant attack on a university in north-eastern Kenya that resulted in the deaths of 147 people.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Malaysia rejected extremism committed in the name of Islam.

“Islam is a religion of peace, tolerance and respect,” he said in a post on his Twitter account.

Reuters reported that gunmen from the militant group Al Shabaab stormed the Garissa University College campus in a pre-dawn attack and killed at least 147 people on Thursday.

It was reported that the siege ended nearly 15 hours after four gunmen shot their way into the campus.

The gunmen, strapped with explosives, were killed, according to a Kenyan official.

Al Shabaab, which carried out the deadly attack on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi in 2013, claimed responsibility for the raid on the campus.
