During his visit to New York on February 18, Dr. Badr Abdel Aati, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates, met with Sujiono, Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, in a move that underscored the depth and maturity of the strategic partnership between Cairo and Jakarta.

The meeting reflected a shared commitment to sustained coordination on issues of mutual concern, particularly within multilateral frameworks. Egypt expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s participation in the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit and welcomed Jakarta’s upcoming chairmanship of the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (2026–2027), emphasizing the importance of active engagement in the group’s forthcoming meetings.

Economic Diplomacy at the Forefront

Economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions. Minister Abdel Aati stressed that the level of trade and investment should better reflect the strength of bilateral relations. Both sides highlighted the importance of:

  • Increasing bilateral trade volume
  • Encouraging private-sector engagement through a joint business forum
  • Exchanging agricultural expertise
  • Addressing non-tariff barriers affecting Egyptian food exports to the Indonesian market

This economic track signals a shift toward more tangible, results-oriented cooperation, aiming to transform political goodwill into measurable economic gains.

Cultural and Institutional Connectivity

The talks also reaffirmed the solid foundation of cultural and educational cooperation between the two nations, particularly the expanding collaboration with Al-Azhar, which symbolizes the deep-rooted civilizational and intellectual ties between Egypt and Indonesia—two influential pillars of the Islamic world.

Additionally, Egypt reiterated its commitment to strengthening institutional relations with ASEAN, building upon its accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in 2016.

Regional Developments: Focus on Gaza

On regional matters, Minister Abdel Aati briefed his Indonesian counterpart on developments in the Gaza Strip. He emphasized the importance of implementing the second phase of the proposed peace framework, supporting the national committee for Gaza’s administration, deploying an international stabilization force to monitor the ceasefire, ensuring uninterrupted humanitarian access, and advancing early recovery and reconstruction efforts—while preserving the unity of Palestinian territory.

Strategic Implications

The Cairo–Jakarta dialogue in New York reflects more than a routine diplomatic encounter. It signals a coordinated approach between two influential Global South actors seeking to strengthen economic integration, expand multilateral influence, and contribute to regional stability.
