Algeria & Portugal sign Several cooperation agreements

AlgeriaThe president of the Republic, at the head of a large delegation, chaired, jointly with Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in digital governance and the modernization of the administration, a programme of cultural exchange 2023-2025, a statement of purpose (SOP) on the strengthening of bilateral cooperation and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) about start-ups and innovation.

Earlier, President Tebboune Chaired, jointly with Portuguese Prime Minister, the opening of the Algerian-Portuguese Economic Forum, intended for bringing together the investors of the two countries, discussing opportunities for cooperation and partnership and enhancing bilateral economic cooperation

During the forum, President Tebboune stressed the great investment opportunities offered by business climate in Algeria, under the new Investment Law.

The law ensures protection for foreign investors and stability of the legal framework governing investments, according to the head of State who invited businessmen in the two countries to explore ways to strengthen economic partnership, for a common economic future up to the level of the political and human relations between the two countries.

The Portuguese “are well aware of the business climate in Algeria and operate easily in the country,” he said, mentioning “the positive results of the Algerian economy.”

Algeria’s “non-hydrocarbon exports amount to more than seven billion dollars in 2022, and the aim is to reach 13 billion dollars in the future.”

During the visit, the president of the Republic paid a visit to the seat of the Portuguese Parliament in Lisbon, where he was welcomed by the speaker of this institution, Augusto Santos Silva.

At a dinner given in his honour by the president of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President Tebboune said he had agreed with his counterpart to make the year 2023 a “pivotal year for the revival of major bilateral events, including the Algerian-Portuguese Summit to be held in the second half of 2023, as part of the follow-up of the results of the joint working group on economic cooperation met in Algiers on 15-16 April 2023.”

In this respect, the president of the Republic expressed his “deep” conviction about the “promising” prospects to be exploited to lay the foundations for a “strong partnership.”

He added that this conviction was expressed during his “rich” discussions with the Portuguese president.

The president of the Republic, who was given a solemn welcome by his counterpart on Tuesday, said in a joint statement to the media that discussions between the two sides had confirmed the deep strategic relations between the two countries and shown “full convergence” of views on regional and international issues, especially the situation in Libya, Mali, Sahel, Western Sahara, Palestine and Ukraine.
