Donald Trump’s expected arrival in Riyadh this morning has ignited widespread speculation over the possible historic nature of his visit. While it is being promoted as a turning point in U.S.-Saudi relations, the substance behind the optics remains uncertain. With Trump’s agenda largely undisclosed, many wonder if this trip will deliver meaningful outcomes or serve merely as a symbolic reaffirmation of American presence in the region.

Rumors—such as unverified claims of Trump’s alleged cocaine use, echoing earlier controversial comments from Russian spokesperson Maria Zakharova about European leaders—underscore how personal controversies risk overshadowing diplomatic efforts. Regardless of their credibility, such narratives highlight the broader issue of global leadership being shaped as much by perception as by policy.

Unlike the scene in Riyadh in 2017—criticized for its spectacle of Gulf wealth and apparent political submission—today’s geopolitical climate is markedly different. The world has shifted profoundly in the past eight years. The U.S. has, to a significant extent, relinquished its uncontested global leadership. In its place, China has risen, not merely as a competing power, but as a systemic alternative. Its approach—anchored in financial engineering, digital integration, artificial intelligence, and mutually beneficial development initiatives—has resonated across the Global South.

China’s investments in the Arab world, reportedly surpassing $400 billion, reflect this tectonic shift. While Saudi Arabia continues to value its long-standing alliance with the United States, it increasingly views China as a vital economic partner. Riyadh’s dual-alignment strategy is less about choosing sides and more about hedging bets in an evolving world order.

Trump’s visit also arrives against the backdrop of serious fiscal challenges in the U.S. Even if Gulf financial commitments are secured, they are unlikely to resolve America’s growing deficit, which is driven by deep-rooted structural issues—entitlement spending, military obligations, and regressive tax policies among them. A temporary injection of capital will not address the foundations of fiscal instability.

Similarly, Trump’s much-hyped “Gega AI” initiative—reportedly estimated at $500 billion—is facing formidable competition. Chinese tech giants like Alibaba, with innovations such as the Quen 2.5 and 3.0 systems, and DeepSeek AI’s breakthroughs at a fraction of the cost, showcase China’s rapid ascendance in artificial intelligence. The cost-effectiveness and scale of Chinese AI raise fundamental questions about the strategic value and feasibility of Trump’s ambitious AI endeavor.

Adding urgency to his visit is the recent hostage crisis involving U.S. and Israeli nationals. Trump’s surprise statement hinting at progress in negotiations with Hamas suggests diplomatic maneuvering behind the scenes. While a resolution could bolster his diplomatic legacy, the broader implications for regional stability and U.S.-Israeli relations remain complex and unresolved.

Ultimately, Trump’s visit underscores the intricate dance between economic leverage and geopolitical influence. Saudi Arabia’s central role in global energy markets and its strategic geography continue to attract both Washington and Beijing. Yet, with China gaining ground through long-term, infrastructure-driven partnerships, the U.S. must offer more than transactional diplomacy if it hopes to retain influence.

In the end, the true measure of this visit’s success will lie not in photo ops or grandiose announcements, but in whether it can genuinely recalibrate America’s role in a region where power is no longer concentrated in a single pole. As the world tilts toward multipolarity, symbolic gestures are no longer enough. What is needed is vision, credibility, and strategy—qualities that will define whether Trump’s return to the Middle East leaves a lasting mark or fades into diplomatic obscurity.
