CAIRO – August 29, 2025 .. The Bright Star 2025 multinational military exercise officially kicked off this week with an opening ceremony at Mohamed Naguib Military Base on August 28, hosted by the Egyptian Armed Forces and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The exercise underscores the enduring U.S.–Egypt defense partnership and highlights the growing commitment of partner nations to regional and global stability.
A Legacy Since 1980
Launched in 1980, Bright Star is one of the oldest and most significant multinational exercises led by CENTCOM. Now in its 19th edition, Bright Star 2025 runs from August 28 through September 10. Its goals are clear: strengthening collective defense capabilities, enhancing regional security, and deepening strategic partnerships.
Global Participation
This year’s exercise is notable for its broad international participation, with over 40 nations taking part. Around 1,800 U.S. service members are training alongside their Egyptian and international counterparts in a wide spectrum of operations, including:
- Conventional and irregular warfare drills,
- Command post exercises,
- Field training,
- Combined joint task force planning,
- Academic seminars and command-and-control operations,
- A senior leader seminar to foster strategic-level dialogue.
A Strong Message of Unity
Brigadier General Patrick Clare emphasized: “Bright Star 2025 reinforces the enduring security partnership between Egypt and the United States – a relationship rooted in decades of cooperation on counterterrorism, regional defense, and efforts to combat violent extremism.”
He added that this year’s exercise sends a powerful message: Egypt, the United States, and our international partners stand united in their commitment to regional stability and military cooperation.
Cornerstone of Defense Relations
Bright Star remains a cornerstone of the U.S.–Egypt defense relationship, playing a vital role in advancing peace and security across the Middle East. Through sustained joint training, the exercise enhances interoperability, develops capabilities, and strengthens coordination around shared strategic objectives.
