EL GOUNA, EGYPT — The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Egypt has partnered with renowned Egyptian designer Karim Mekhtigian, luxury brand IRAM Jewelry, and actress Enjy Kiwan in a first-of-its-kind creative collaboration aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing support for global food security.
To mark the occasion, the partners co-created a bespoke piece of fine jewelry, unveiled on the red carpet at the opening ceremony of the El Gouna Film Festival and worn by Enjy Kiwan. Following the festival, the exclusive piece will be put up for auction, with all proceeds directly benefiting WFP’s projects in Egypt that support vulnerable communities.
“Food security is one of the defining challenges of our time, yet for far too many, it remains an elusive reality,” said Roda El-Husseini, WFP Representative and Country Director in Egypt. “The true power of this collaboration lies in the dedication of our partners, who chose to lend their talents, artistry, and platforms to bring this vital conversation into spaces where WFP is not typically present.”
She added: “Achieving food security for all requires collective action. Purposeful partnerships like this keep the cause at the forefront of public discourse while generating essential funds that go directly to the communities we serve.”
All three partners contributed their expertise, time, and resources on a entirely voluntary basis. The initiative underscores the pivotal role artists, designers, and cultural influencers play in bridging humanitarian issues with new audiences and inspiring collective action.
Reflecting on the partnership, actress Enjy Kiwan shared: “One of cinema and culture’s greatest strengths is their ability to connect people with realities beyond their own. Food security may seem abstract to some, but it is a daily struggle for millions. I am honored to be part of a collaboration that elevates this issue onto one of the region’s largest cultural platforms. By weaving together art, design, and development, I hope we can spark deeper empathy and action for a cause that touches the core of our shared humanity.”
The design draws inspiration from the ears of wheat featured in the WFP emblem—a vital staple crop and a timeless symbol of nourishment and security.
Architect and designer Karim Mekhtigian explained his vision: “In crafting this piece, I wanted to embody the concept of empowerment that defines both design and this noble cause. Inspired by the wheat in WFP’s logo, the piece symbolizes strength, resilience, and the endless possibilities that emerge when people are given the sustenance and resources to shape their own futures.”
IRAM Jewelry brought the concept to life through master craftsmanship and production support. Rafat Nassar, Chairman of IRAM Jewelry, stated: “At IRAM, we believe jewelry should be more than an adornment—it should tell a story, carry purpose, and reflect core values. We are proud to support WFP’s mission through a piece that opens meaningful dialogue around food security. We are confident the auction proceeds will translate creative art into tangible, life-changing support for vulnerable families.”
