Beijing, August 22, 2025 (Xinhua) — President Xi Jinping will attend the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, scheduled to be held in the northern Chinese municipality of Tianjin on August 31 and September 1, where he will also host related events.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday that Xi will chair the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO, as well as the “SCO Plus” gathering, delivering two keynote speeches.

During the summit, Xi will host a welcome banquet and hold bilateral activities with attending leaders.

In a press briefing, Liu Bin, Assistant Foreign Minister of China, described the summit as one of the most significant diplomatic events hosted by China this year.

Through his two major addresses, Xi is expected to present China’s renewed vision and proposals for the SCO, highlighting the spirit of Shanghai, the responsibilities of the current era, and the aspirations of the peoples of member states.

Xi will also announce new measures and initiatives by China to support the SCO’s high-quality development, strengthen comprehensive cooperation, and explore fresh approaches to global governance. According to Liu, these steps will aim to contribute constructively to the preservation of the post–World War II international order while advancing reforms in global governance.

The summit will also see Xi and other SCO leaders sign and issue a joint declaration, adopt the organization’s ten-year development strategy, and release commemorative statements marking the 80th anniversary of victory in the global fight against fascism and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. A series of outcome documents will also be approved, focusing on deepening cooperation in security, economic development, cultural exchange, and people-to-people ties.
