German Ambassador to Cairo, Frank Hartmann, stressed that the situation of civilians in Gaza has “turned into a hell and a nightmare on earth,” emphasizing that his country’s support for Israel’s security does not mean approving all of its actions, especially given the mounting humanitarian catastrophe.
Speaking to a group of journalists this morning, Hartmann explained that the new German government, which took office in March, has adopted a more critical stance toward Israel. He noted that Chancellor Olaf Merz has also expressed concern over the tragedies endured daily by Palestinians.
The ambassador underlined Germany’s long-standing support for the Palestinian cause, not only through statements but also by providing financial aid and technical advice. He revealed that Berlin has allocated nearly €300 million to Gaza and the Palestinian Authority, stressing that no solution can be achieved without Palestinian participation, and that peaceful coexistence through a two-state solution remains the only viable path.
Hartmann praised Egypt’s role in the Palestinian file, describing it as both “responsible and wise.” He highlighted Cairo’s mediation efforts with the United States and Qatar, its support for Palestinian reconciliation, as well as its humanitarian assistance and reconstruction plan, which currently forms the basis for ongoing ceasefire negotiations.
On the recognition of a Palestinian state, the ambassador clarified that Germany views it as the ultimate objective. However, he argued that recognition must be tied to negotiations that lead to a genuine two-state solution, since unilateral recognition today would not change the facts on the ground.
Regarding Iran, Hartmann noted that the activation of the “snapback mechanism” last week reinstated the sanctions stipulated in the 2015 nuclear agreement, including arms bans and export restrictions in the nuclear sector. He expressed Germany’s regret over the escalation, but affirmed that Berlin continues to extend its hand to Tehran in the hope of returning to negotiations and achieving peaceful solutions.
The ambassador concluded by reiterating that, while Germany remains historically committed to Israel’s security, it will continue to advocate for Palestinian rights and work for a just and lasting peace that guarantees dignity and security for all peoples of the region.
