In a world where climate change is no longer a distant threat but a present reality, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) stands as one of Europe’s most ambitious steps toward a greener and fairer future — a bridge connecting continents, and shared responsibility.
CBAM is not a trade barrier. It is a moral compass, ensuring that the true cost of pollution is never ignored, and that carbon emissions are accounted for wherever they occur.
Its purpose is to make sure that imported products reflect their environmental footprint, aligning the carbon cost of imports with that of European goods — thus protecting climate fairness rather than industrial privilege.
The European Union’s goal is clear: to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and to create a marketplace where innovation, not pollution, defines competitiveness.
Here in Egypt, the CBAM has sparked vital dialogue — questions, debates, and above all, awareness. Yet what truly inspires us is Egypt’s own commitment to green transformation. The government’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions, expand renewable energy, and embed sustainability into national policy reflect a vision that resonates deeply with Europe’s climate ambitions.
The EU Delegation has worked hand in hand with Egyptian partners, organizing workshops, roundtables, and online briefings through the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Taxation and Customs Union (DG TAXUD). In fact, Egypt was the first trading partner to welcome DG TAXUD in 2024 for a dedicated presentation on the CBAM — a testament to the depth of our partnership.
Today, our cooperation goes beyond trade or policy — it is a shared environmental covenant, a bridge of trust and mutual commitment spanning from the Mediterranean to the Nile.
For when Europe’s green spirit meets Egypt’s enduring river,
the current flows toward one destiny —
a just, clean, and sustainable world for generations to come.
