Cairo glows this September with the harmony of two civilizations, as Egypt and South Korea mark the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic ties through a year-long series of cultural events that weave memory with art, and history with music.

Organized under the patronage of Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism through the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE), and in collaboration with the Korean Presidential Archives as well as Egypt’s Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Culture, the celebrations stand as a testament to culture’s timeless role in bridging nations.

The Special Exhibition: “Ham – What We Carry Together”
The Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo will host a special exhibition from September 11 to 28 under the title “Ham – What We Carry Together.” Inspired by the Korean tradition of “Ham”—a symbolic gift chest offered during significant life moments—the exhibition captures the spirit of new beginnings and faithful promises. On display will be diplomatic documents chronicling three decades of partnership, alongside 15 symbolic gifts exchanged by the leaders of both nations. Visitors will also encounter exquisite Korean handicrafts and intangible cultural heritage, offering a unique window into Korea’s rich legacy.

The Concert: Soprano Sumi Jo with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra
On September 12, the Cairo Opera House will host an extraordinary concert marking the first-ever performance in Egypt by world-renowned Korean soprano Sumi Jo, accompanied by the Cairo Symphony Orchestra. The program will feature a selection of opera’s finest classics, beloved Korean songs, and special pieces curated to embody the harmony of Egyptian and Korean cultural ties. The concert has already stirred wide anticipation across Egypt’s artistic circles, hailed as a rare fusion of tradition and modernity.

A New Chapter for Cooperation
Park Chang-sik, President of KOFICE, emphasized that the commemoration is not only a celebration of 30 years of friendship, but also a milestone for deeper cultural cooperation in the decades ahead. He expressed hope that these events will foster greater mutual understanding and elevate bilateral relations to new horizons.

Korea as Guest of Honor
Adding to this momentum, South Korea will participate as Guest of Honor at the Cairo International Arts Festival (CIAD), further enriching the dialogue between the two nations and sketching a new cultural canvas under the theme: “Culture—A Bridge Beyond Time.”
