The statement issued by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reflects a clear diplomatic stance aimed at containing the rapidly escalating tensions in the region by emphasizing the primacy of international law and respect for national sovereignty over military confrontation.

Through a series of phone calls between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his counterparts in Russia, Iran, France, and Oman, Beijing appears to be positioning itself as a global actor seeking to de-escalate tensions and reopen diplomatic channels, at a time when fears are growing that the crisis could spiral into a broader regional conflict.

China’s message carries several important political implications. First, Beijing views military attacks during ongoing negotiations as actions that undermine political solutions and erode trust among the parties involved. Secondly, the Chinese position strongly rejects the assassination of leaders of sovereign states or incitement to regime change by force, a principle consistent with China’s longstanding doctrine of non-interference in internal affairs.

At the same time, Beijing seeks to balance its regional diplomacy. While expressing support for Iran’s right to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and legitimate rights, China also highlights the importance of the security and sovereignty of Gulf states, signaling its intention to maintain stable relations with all actors across the region.

At the heart of China’s stance is a broader warning against a return to a world governed by the “law of the jungle,” where stronger powers impose their will through military superiority. Beijing therefore calls for an immediate halt to military operations, a swift return to dialogue and negotiations, and collective opposition to unilateral actions that could further destabilize the region.

Ultimately, China’s position reflects its broader strategic vision of a more balanced international order, one grounded in diplomacy, multilateralism, and respect for sovereignty rather than military coercion.

In doing so, Beijing seeks to reinforce its role as a responsible global power advocating for peace, stability, and negotiated solutions, particularly through international platforms such as the United Nations Security Council.
