In a moment where civilizations breathe together and ideas find harmony, Beijing hosted the Confucian–Islamic Dialogue 2026 on April 16, gathering nearly 300 scholars and experts from 24 countries in a shared pursuit of bridging spiritual values and philosophical wisdom.

The event, jointly organized by the International Confucian Association and International Islamic University Malaysia, stood as a testament to a growing global realization: dialogue among civilizations is no longer optional—it is essential for a balanced and interconnected future.

At the heart of the forum, Shandong emerged as a living bridge between traditions and time. Bai Shan, Deputy Head of the United Front Work Department of the provincial Party Committee, presented a compelling account of Shandong’s “Meeting of Islam and Confucianism.” His remarks unfolded across three key dimensions—intellectual engagement, social harmony, and cultural heritage—offering not just theory, but a vivid narrative of coexistence and mutual enrichment, widely praised by participants.

In recent years, Shandong has worked to strengthen a unified sense of national identity while advancing a localized expression of religious life. Beyond supporting international dialogues, the province has actively contributed to cultural exchanges in Malaysia and expanded platforms for open, constructive engagement between civilizations.

As a historic cradle of Chinese civilization and a foundational ground for this intellectual encounter, Shandong has moved beyond concept into practical and innovative transformation. It has launched academic forums, deepened research on intercultural exchange, and contributed to joint scholarship, including the publication of Readings on Islam in Contemporary China, a work that seeks to reframe the relationship between faith and culture in a modern context.

In a notable initiative, Shandong has also advanced the concept of “new preaching,” guiding religious discourse toward greater alignment with contemporary societal needs, reinforcing the idea that faith, when engaged with reality, becomes a force for unity rather than division.

Extending its vision into symbolic space, the province introduced the brand “Meeting of Islam and Confucianism – National Pilgrimage,” transforming dialogue into a lived cultural journey that reflects the convergence of values, identity, and shared human experience.

Shandong’s experience, therefore, is not merely regional—it is a civilizational narrative that transcends geography, offering a profound lesson: true dialogue is not born from difference alone, but from the ability to transform difference into harmony.
