Not every media visit is merely a protocol event. Some become windows through which nations glimpse one another’s spirit, spaces where history meets vision, and where words transform into lasting connections. Such was the atmosphere surrounding the meeting between an Egyptian media delegation and the leadership of China’s People’s Daily in Beijing.

The Egyptian delegation, representing several media institutions, including The Diplomat Arabic and English editions, was received by Mr. CUI Shixin, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of People’s Daily. The meeting was attended by senior leaders of People’s Daily and Global Times, including Ms. MA Xiaoning, Director-General of the International News Department; Mr. GUAN Kejiang, President and Editor-in-Chief of Global Times; Mr. LI Zhiqiang, Deputy Director-General of the External Relations Department; and Mr. SHI Ding, Managing Editor of Huanqiu.com.

The visit took place within the framework of strengthening cultural and media cooperation between Egypt and China, under the supervision of the Chinese Embassy in Cairo and in coordination with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It reflected the growing importance of media exchanges as a pillar of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.

More Than a Newspaper: A Voice of China and a Bridge to the World

During the meeting, Mr. CUI Shixin emphasized that People’s Daily is far more than a news organization. It is a platform for dialogue among civilizations and a bridge connecting China with the wider world.

Since its founding in 1948, the newspaper has remained committed to professional journalism, social responsibility, and the pursuit of mutual understanding. He noted that media cooperation with Arab countries, particularly Egypt, represents an important avenue for enhancing cultural exchanges and deepening people-to-people ties.

According to Mr. Cui, China and Egypt share a unique partnership built on mutual respect, common interests, and a rich civilizational heritage. Media institutions, he argued, have a crucial role in transforming diplomatic relations from official agreements into living stories that resonate with ordinary citizens.

People’s Daily: The Chronicle of a Nation’s Transformation

To understand People’s Daily is to understand a significant part of modern China’s story.

Founded one year before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the newspaper has witnessed and documented every major chapter of the nation’s development—from reconstruction and reform to modernization, technological innovation, and China’s emergence as a major global power.

Today, People’s Daily stands as one of the world’s most influential media institutions, operating through an extensive network of newspapers, digital platforms, research centers, and multilingual publications that reach audiences across continents.

One of the most remarkable indicators of its influence is its daily circulation of 3.5 million printed copies, an extraordinary achievement at a time when print media faces significant challenges worldwide.

Why Do Millions Still Read It?

During the discussions, Ashraf AboArafe, Editor-in-Chief of The Diplomat Arabic and English editions, expressed admiration for the newspaper’s success, noting that its impressive circulation figures are not merely the result of scale, but of credibility.

He observed that People’s Daily’s commitment to professional ethics and responsible journalism has been instrumental in building trust among readers and expanding its influence throughout the world, particularly in the Middle East and Africa.

AboArafe added that this approach shares similarities with the editorial philosophy of The Diplomat, which seeks to go beyond headlines and provide deeper analysis of the forces shaping global events.

“In today’s world,” he noted, “readers are not only searching for information; they are searching for understanding. They seek insight into what lies beyond the news.”

Media as a Form of Modern Diplomacy

The meeting highlighted a broader reality of the twenty-first century: media has become an essential instrument of cultural diplomacy.

Just as the ancient Silk Road carried goods, ideas, and innovations across civilizations, modern media carries narratives, perspectives, and human experiences across borders. Through responsible journalism, nations can better understand one another and overcome stereotypes that often divide societies.

In this sense, media cooperation between Egypt and China represents more than professional exchange. It is an investment in mutual understanding between two of the world’s oldest and most enduring civilizations.

Beyond the Meeting

The discussions extended beyond formal introductions and institutional presentations. They reflected a shared desire to deepen cooperation, exchange expertise, and explore new avenues of collaboration in journalism, digital media, and cultural communication.

Both the Egyptian and Chinese participants expressed sincere interest in strengthening professional ties and fostering greater dialogue between their respective media communities.

Such efforts are increasingly important in a rapidly changing world, where responsible journalism can serve as a force for understanding, stability, and constructive engagement.

A New Chapter in an Ancient Friendship

In an age often dominated by noise and division, the power of honest communication remains one of humanity’s most valuable assets.

Between the Nile River, cradle of one of history’s greatest civilizations, and the Yellow River, birthplace of another, journalism continues to serve as a messenger of dialogue and understanding.

The visit to People’s Daily was therefore more than a media engagement. It was a symbolic chapter in the evolving story of Egyptian-Chinese friendship—a story written not only through diplomatic agreements and economic partnerships, but also through the enduring power of words, ideas, and shared aspirations.

As both nations continue to strengthen their strategic partnership, media cooperation will remain one of the most effective bridges connecting their peoples, cultures, and visions for the future.
