The League of Arab States celebrates Arab Nursing and Midwifery Day on November 3 each year, paying tribute to the dedication of nurses and midwives and recognising their vital role in protecting community health and enhancing the quality of healthcare services.

The annual observance was established pursuant to Resolution No. 12, adopted by the Council of Arab Health Ministers in March 2021, in recognition of the fundamental contributions of nursing and midwifery professionals, particularly their outstanding role during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On this occasion, the General Secretariat extends its deepest appreciation and respect to every nurse and midwife, reaffirming that investing in nursing and midwifery is a direct investment in patient safety, quality healthcare services, and the achievement of universal health coverage.

Nursing professionals constitute the backbone of healthcare systems. They are often the first to stand beside patients, accompanying them throughout their treatment and hospital stay until discharge. They also represent the first line of defence during crises and emergencies, demonstrating humanity, professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment—qualities that deserve the highest recognition and gratitude.

In this regard, the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Health Ministers reaffirms its commitment to working with relevant ministries and institutions to support and strengthen the role of nursing and midwifery specialisations, while advancing continuous professional development programmes for nurses and midwives.

Furthermore, the League of Arab States continues to promote cooperation and coordination among Arab countries, facilitating the exchange of expertise, knowledge, and successful experiences. In this context, the Council of Arab Health Ministers adopted the Arab Strategy for Advancing the Nursing and Midwifery Professions (2022–2030), providing a framework for developing these vital professions across the Arab world.

In 2022, the Council also adopted Resolution No. 8, Paragraph Two, endorsing a unified Arab slogan for the celebration of Arab Nursing and Midwifery Day.

Moreover, during its 60th Ordinary Session in May 2024, the Council of Arab Health Ministers underscored the importance of involving nursing and midwifery leaders in the formulation of health policies within ministries of health, strengthening their participation in decision-making and recognising their essential contribution to the advancement of healthcare systems.

On Arab Nursing and Midwifery Day, the League of Arab States renews its appreciation for those whose hands heal, whose dedication protects lives, and whose compassion gives healthcare its human meaning.
