THE General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, represented by the Social Affairs Sector’s Social Studies and Field Surveys Unit, in cooperation with the Media Department of the Media and Communication Sector and with the support of the Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND), is organizing a training workshop entitled “Enhancing the Capacities of Arab Media Professionals in Using and Disseminating Development Statistics and Indicators.”

The workshop brings together approximately 35 journalists and media professionals from around 10 Arab countries, representing Arab media institutions accredited to the League of Arab States and in the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The workshop addresses several key themes, including the importance of data and statistics in covering population and development issues, the foundations for understanding development indicators, and the skills required to handle and analyze statistical data. It also explores data journalism techniques that transform figures and indicators into compelling media stories, alongside the production of multimedia content for different platforms and the professional handling of sensitive development issues across the Arab region.

The training programme features specialized sessions on reliable statistical data and indicators and their national and international sources. Participants will also explore data-driven media content creation, techniques for simplifying figures and preparing media materials, modern and innovative approaches to data analysis and visualization, and the use of infographics and creative storytelling to produce engaging visual narratives.

In addition, the programme includes hands-on group exercises, presentations of participants’ media outputs, and discussions on developing a reference publication entitled “A Development Guide for Media Professionals.”

Through practical training and collaborative discussions, the workshop seeks to foster the exchange of expertise among participants and strengthen their ability to produce accurate, accessible, evidence-based media content that communicates development information clearly and responsibly to the public.

Its expected outcomes include improving participants’ capacity to analyze population and development indicators and translate them into effective media narratives, producing practical examples of media content supported by statistical evidence, and discussing the development of a reference guide that simplifies demographic, statistical, and development terminology.

Ultimately, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between data and public understanding, equipping Arab media professionals with the knowledge and tools to make statistics meaningful, development issues more accessible, and evidence-based journalism a stronger force for informed public awareness across the Arab world.
