IN a poignant moment of transition for Arab diplomacy, the Council of the League of Arab States, meeting at the ministerial level in the Jordanian capital, Amman, this evening, expressed its profound gratitude and deep appreciation to His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League, as his tenure draws to a close.
The Council highly commended Aboul Gheit’s dedicated efforts, wisdom, and exceptional competence in steering the ship of joint Arab action through a turbulent era marked by unprecedented regional and international challenges.
Looking toward a new horizon of Arab solidarity, the Council officially endorsed the appointment of Mr. Nabil Fahmy as the new Secretary-General of the Arab League for a five-year term, commencing July 1, 2026. Wishing him utmost success in his new mandate, the Council expressed absolute confidence in Fahmy’s extensive diplomatic expertise and his capacity to carry forward the torch of Arab cooperation while confronting contemporary global dynamics.
Reflecting on a legacy of dedication, the Council praised Aboul Gheit’s pivotal role in championing core Arab causes—most notably the Palestinian cause—and his unwavering commitment to preserving the Arab League as a sanctuary of unity and a shared umbrella for collective progress.
