In a breathtaking convergence of ancient wisdom and timeless grandeur, the Embassy of India in Cairo celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY 2026) against the majestic backdrop of the Giza Pyramids—the eternal jewel of Egypt. The event brought together senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, distinguished guests, yoga practitioners, and friends of India from all corners of Egypt.
As the morning sun bathed the Giza plateau, the serene spirit of yoga merged seamlessly with the monumental legacy of the Pyramids. The celebration illuminated yoga not just as an exercise, but as a path to physical vitality, mental clarity, and harmony with the natural world. Bound by a shared breath, participants joined in a mass yoga session, beautifully embodying the message of universal unity and holistic wellness that IDY champions across the globe.
A Dialogue of Civilizations
Addressing the gathering, H.E. Mr. Suresh Reddy, Ambassador of India to Egypt, noted that yoga has evolved into a powerful global symbol of well-being, inclusivity, and shared human values. He emphasized that hosting this year’s celebration at the Pyramids represents a historic meeting of two great civilizations whose rich cultural legacies continue to inspire and elevate humanity.
The event was graced by Guests of Honor Dr. Ashraf Mohie, Director General of the Pyramids Area and renowned Egyptologist, alongside acclaimed Egyptian actor Mohamed Khamis. Both expressed their deep appreciation for the flourishing bonds between India and Egypt, noting that the ancient Pyramids provided the ultimate sanctuary for a celebration rooted in inner peace and timelessness.
Echoes of Wellness Across Egypt
The grand finale at the Pyramids capped off a month of vibrant, community-centered pre-events organized by the Embassy to weave the spirit of yoga into the daily life of Egypt:
-
Yoga for Golden Years: Aligning with this year’s global theme, “Yoga for Healthy Aging,” the Embassy partnered with the Golden Years Foundation for a special workshop. Nearly 500 senior citizens from diverse backgrounds discovered how yoga fosters balance, flexibility, and vitality, proving that youthfulness is a state of mind and body.

-
The Art of Wellness: In collaboration with the Fayoum Art Center and the Egyptian Caricature Society, the Embassy hosted a “Yoga Caricature Contest.” Over 200 artists from 33 countries channeled their wit and imagination, using humor to explore health and mindfulness.
-
Capturing the Breath: Through the “My Favorite Yoga Pose” photography contest, enthusiasts captured the elegance of yoga poses set against Egypt’s most stunning natural landscapes and historical monuments.

-
Digital Wisdom: Throughout the past month, the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) broadcasted the “IDY 2026 Yoga Video Series,” where expert instructors demonstrated foundational poses—such as Balasana (Child’s Pose), Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Lord of the Fishes Pose), and Dandasana (Staff Pose)—bringing the science of yoga to screens across the nation.

Extending its reach beyond the capital, the Embassy and MACIC also journeyed to Ismailia and Alexandria, hosting regional yoga workshops and “India Culture Days.” The overwhelming public response echoed a profound truth: the friendship between the people of India and Egypt is as deep and enduring as the history they share.
