IN the heart of Cairo, where civilizations meet and history echoes the call for wisdom, a new thread of human coexistence was woven. Azerbaijan’s participation in the Arab League’s 2nd International Conference on “Islamic Communities in the West and Their Role in Combatting Islamophobia” went beyond a mere presence on the agenda—it served as an eloquent tribute to peaceful coexistence and a message written in the light of multiculturalism against the shadows of hatred.
Held over two days of high-level dialogue, the Executive Director of the Baku International Multiculturalism Centre, Mr. Ravan Hasanov, presented his nation’s living model of diversity. Speaking during the session dedicated to national and international best practices in countering anti-Muslim hate speech, Hasanov stressed that Islamophobia is not simply an isolated form of discrimination, but a profound threat to human rights, societal stability, and global security. Consequently, eradicating it must remain an inseparable pillar of the global fight against racism and xenophobia.
Hasanov outlined the Azerbaijani experience, highlighting how multiculturalism serves as a cornerstone of state policy. Anchored in a constitution that guarantees absolute equality regardless of faith, ethnicity, or language, Azerbaijan actively nurtures intercultural dialogue and empowers its youth with values of tolerance. He also noted that the annual Baku International Conference on Islamophobia, hosted since 2023, continues to provide a vital platform for advancing global discourse on the issue.
Translating vision into action, Hasanov proposed actionable international steps: establishing unified global standards to define hate speech, enhancing institutional monitoring, integrating interfaith education into school curricula, and ensuring ethical accountability across media and digital platforms.
His message from Cairo was clear: confronting prejudice is not the burden of any single faith or nation, but a shared responsibility of all humanity. Extending Azerbaijan’s readiness to expand strategic cooperation with the League of Arab States, ICESCO, the OIC, and the United Nations, he reaffirmed Baku’s commitment to supporting multilateral frameworks and building permanent, institutional platforms for peace.
