Today, September 13, Mr. Nabil Fahmy, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met with Mr. Pekka Haavisto, Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan.
During an extensive discussion session, both sides reviewed the latest developments in Sudan and exchanged views on the outcome of the Quintet Mechanism’s visit to Khartoum this week. The Quintet mechanism comprises the Arab League, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the European Union, and the United Nations. They also discussed ways to support peace and stability in Sudan.
The Official Spokesperson for the Secretary-General stated that the UN Personal Envoy outlined the United Nations’ efforts, conducted in close cooperation and coordination with the Arab League and other Quintet members, to bring an end to the war and resolve the conflict in Sudan.
The discussions also focused on various efforts to end the war by reaching a humanitarian truce that would pave the way for a permanent ceasefire while preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
For his part, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the Arab League’s unwavering stance in support of the Sudanese people and their legitimate aspirations for peace, security, and sustainable development. He emphasized that the immediate priority remains halting hostilities, protecting civilians, and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid in accordance with international law, alongside launching an inclusive, Sudanese-led and owned political process.
Furthermore, Mr. Fahmy stressed that addressing the Sudanese crisis requires parallel movement across political, humanitarian, and military tracks. He highlighted the core principles defining the Arab League’s position on Sudan, foremost of which are:

Preserving the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Sudan.

Safeguard national state institutions.

Rejecting any arrangements or tracks that perpetuate division or establish parallel entities.

Preventing external interference in Sudanese internal affairs.

Launching a comprehensive, Sudanese-led political process that ensures the participation of all segments of Sudanese society.
